Dave Matthews Band is my most favorite band, but the DMB in the title doesn’t stand for the band’s initial. DMB or digital multimedia broadcasting has been in Korea for more than three years now. It’s the mobile TV standard in South Korea.
I bought the DMB player above for my husband. It was my Christmas present for him. He usually spends almost two hours a day commuting to and from work. There are “handphones” (Korean term for mobile phone) equipped with a DMB player but my husband wouldn’t buy a new phone since the one he’s using is still in great condition. He’s not so crazy about trends.
Last Saturday I used the DMB player since my parents-in-law (who were visiting) were watching TV while my husband used our PC and our son was watching “Ratatouille” (for the nth time!) I chanced upon a special documentary on poverty on MBC’s DMB channel. They focused on a less fortunate family in the Philippines, a relatively young mother of six was having a difficult time budgeting her husband’s 300 peso-a-day salary. A few shoppers at the Commonwealth market were also interviewed about the prices of food in the Philippines.
Being an expat in a country where there is no TFC, I am always excited to see my country/men on TV. I am also amused at how the Philippines is portrayed on Korean TV like the special KBS series last year.
Back to DMB, the reception is so clear and the sound always crisp. It’s accessbile even from the subways or basements. There are only a handful of channels but even just myYTN is enough for my husband.
