Bad news for Filipinos wanting to work in South Korea. PNoy’s government has ordered a ban on sending OFWs or overseas Filipino workers to South Korea because of the tension with its northern enemy – I refuse to use the word “brothers” for obvious reasons.
Here is the full text of the news article that came out on ABS-CBN:
MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine government has ordered a ban on the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to the Korean peninsula, radio dzMM reported Saturday.
The ban was prompted by the ongoing tension between the North and the South Korean governments.
According to Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte, the implementation of the deployment ban was a decision of the government team that included the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), and the Department of Labor and Employment, among others.
The team was tasked by President Benigno Aquino III to continuously assess the situation in Korea.
Valte said there are 46,000 Filipinos, including undocumented workers, in the Korean peninsula.
Meanwhile, Special Envoy Roy Cimatu arrived in Seoul, Korea on Saturday morning to conduct an assessment on the looming war between the 2 Koreas.
Cimatu heads the 6-man rapid response team dispatched by the Philippine government amid growing tensions between the two countries.
He is also tasked to make necessary recommendations whether to repatriate Filipinos working in the peninsula.

When will this ban be lifted? Let’s see what happens during the US-SoKor exercises this week.
UPDATE: It seems that Philippine government officials have not been communicating well. Presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte has refuted the words of Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz. There is NO BAN ON OFWs TO KOREA, just a deferment.
