Aside from all the questions about getting a tourist visa to Korea or letters of invitations. I’ve also been receiving many questions about the “Korean Dual Citizenship Law”. This law will take effect on January 1, 2011. Now the question that I’ve been receiving is if this is also applicable for those foreigners (Filipinas) married to Koreans who have acquired Korean citizenship.
If you’ve acquired Korean citizenship before July 2, 2010, then you won’t be eligible for the dual citizenship. As an example, if you’ve acquired Korean citizenship on May 30 this year then you can’t apply for the dual citizenship next year. If you acquired Korean citizenship on August 5, 2010 for example, you can reapply for the dual citizenship.
Those who would get their citizenships next year would have to either renounce their Filipino nationality or pledge as a dual citizen. As a dual citizen, they should not exercise their rights as a Filipino while in South Korea though. In short, they should prioritize their South Korean nationality while in the country.
If you have more information about this, please don’t hesitate to comment. Thanks!

I have been wondering if which is better, opting for a dual citizenship or solely korean citizenship? what are the benefits can we get out from each of these?
Hi 4evrloyl! They have just introduced the dual citizenship this year and I’m not a dual citizen so I really don’t know, apart from the fact that you can retain your original citizenship.

Hello, Mr. Louis Park.
There are qualifications before one can apply for a dual citizenship. The blog above is based on the article written in this link:

May this help you.
I have a question regarding dual citizenship.
I was born in Korea but immigrated to US when I was 6.
Later when I turned 21, I obtained a US Citizenship and gave up my Korean citizenship. At the time there was no dual citizenship option.
I would like have dual citizenship and wonder if it is possible for me to regain my Korean citizenship?
Thanks
