Aside from Iza Calzado and Robbie Mananquil, another Filipino who was also awarded at Korea’s 2007 Asia Model Awards is folk singer and composer Freddie Aguilar. He was rightfully awarded the Star of Asia (from the Philippines) on January 18, 2008 at JW Marriott in Seoul. Others who received the same award for their countries are Jang Nara (Korea), Shibuya Asuka (Japan), Esther K. Chae (US) and Ai Dai (China).
Freddie Aguilar became famous in Korea for his worldwide hit “Anak.” When I first came here and I said that I was from the Philippines, the people I met always ask me about Ka Freddie and his famous song. In every noraebang or singing room, you’ll find the song “Anak” together with other famous worldwide hits. KBS TV also did a documentary special on him last Spring.

  1. When I was in Korea last October, I was so surprised when I suddenly heard this very familiar song intro being played in the subway station. It turned out to be Freddie Aguilar’s song Anak. He must be really popular in Korea.

  4. Oh I remember him when i was in Elementary. I saw him with his wife attending our gradiation. His son and daughters studied in the same school that i went to. sT. Joseph’s college. Isabel, Jonas.. I remember Isabel. We weren’t really classmates, but i rememer her for being fond of rollerblading, if my memory suits me right. Her older brother if i’m not mistaken was also a co-GradeSchool student body official. who else.. ah! Their cousin was my seatmate too! Gian Rey Hipolito.Kekek. I remember him coz he’d always ask to drink from my water jug. My mom would always scold me for not drinking everything, so I’d always happily let Gian drink juice from my jug.
Sigh.brings back old memories. I wonder what happende to them.
