Korean Scandal: Moms in the Philippines

A topic that made it to the trending list of Daum tonight is that of Korean moms in the Philippines. On MBC’s Reality Eye, they featured a story on Korean moms accompanying their children to study in the Philippines. For about 3 million won (roughly 3,000 USD) a month, a Korean mom can experience “utopia”. She could afford to hire a housekeeper and a driver and send her child to a private school or hire a private tutor. Korean parents send their kids to the Philippines to study English or attend private schools. The Korean mom who accompanies her child to the Philippines to study is called “기러기 엄마” or goose mom.
However, a scandalous activity is exposed on MBC’s Reality Eye. Apparently, a few Korean moms also spend money on going to massage parlors or nightclubs. There they spend money on men. One man said he receives 20,000 pesos per week from his Korean benefactor.

It would seem that these Korean moms are enjoying their freedom in the Philippines. They don’t have to do household chores as they can pay for house help, food is cheap and education for their kids is in English.
On the other hand, Korean dads left in South Korea feast on instant noodles and experience depression from living alone.

  1. I am not surprise at all. They also done that here in Korea “going into nigth clubs” thing.

  2. I used to work in a hagwon back in the Philippines, I’ve seen this “situation” happen often for Korean moms in the Philippines and that was 13 years ago! Back when studying English in the Philippines was such a boom for Koreans. I have witnessed some Korean moms going to the extent of divorcing their Korean husbands.

  3. Not all of them are like that. Same with any other race. I really don’t like stereotypes. Its for ignorant people. So what if someone generalized all the Pinay moms from Korea, that all of em are Mail Order Brides.. But well hmmm….

    1. We already know that NOT ALL OF THEM ARE LIKE THAT. Korean media covered it because it is happening and it may be causing family problems. Hopefully, they could find a solution or bringing it out in the open may raise awareness.
