I am so psyched up for the first match of the South Korea soccer team against Russia in 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The match will take place on June 18 (Wednesday) at 7 o’clock in the morning. Unlike the previous World Cups, people will not cheer at the Seoul Plaza since the mourning for the victims of Sewol is still ongoing.
Four years ago, I watched Korea’s soccer match against Argentina. Korea lost 1:4 but I had fun being with the Korean fans at the Seoul Plaza. The cheering will take place in Gwanghwamun and in Gangnam this year. It will be fun as workers will be on the way to work while the match is ongoing. I could just imagine the cheers in the subway during the rush hour. Hmm, will they be able to watch on their DMB phones?
I am not a serious soccer fan but I’ve been following the World Cup since 1998. In 2002, the World Cup was co-hosted by Korea and Japan. I was not in Korea yet that time but I’ve been an Arirang viewer since 2000. Oh yeah, I’ve been a Jang Dong Gun fan from that time.
During the 2002 World Cup, the theme song was also sung by singers from Korea and Japan ~ Let’s Get Together Now. Here’s the music video of that song:
And here’s a video of when it was sung during the opening of the World Cup 2002:
And what about the cheering songs for the Korean team?
Here’s the cheering song for 2006 World Cup sung by Buzz:
The cheering song for 2010 World Cup sung by Transfixion, Big Bang and Kim Yuna:
The 2014 version of that song:
And this is the most famous of all the cheering songs…
Are you ready to don on your red shirt tomorrow?

Soutk-Korea played well, but there needs Guus Hiddink again! They were then marvelous!
